Why Radar Altimeters Matter for Autonomous UAVs

As UAVs take on more autonomous, higher-stakes missions, above-ground-level altitude becomes one of the few measurements that has to be right every time. Takeoff, landing, terrain following, and low-altitude delivery all depend on the aircraft knowing precisely how far it is from the surface below, not estimating it.

This is a bigger challenge than it appears. GPS and barometric sensors provide altitude relative to sea level or a fixed reference point, not the terrain the aircraft is actually flying over. Cameras and lidar perform well under favorable conditions, but their accuracy degrades in rain, dust, fog, darkness, and low-contrast surfaces like water, snow, and sand, precisely the conditions where reliable altitude data matters most.

Radar measures true distance to the surface directly, in real time, regardless of lighting or weather, which is why it continues to perform when other sensors are compromised.
